Sunday Salon in Lavatersaal, Zürich is an offering filled with live music, poetry and story telling that are based on the experience we share together as human beings who are going through similar situations in life. Founded by Yilan Zhao in February 2022, the Matinee series aims to break the boundaries between audience and performers by inviting everyone into the conversation of communicative art and making the floor a less formal and more interactive space for sharing. Every event is followed up by an Apéro for meeting new friends and asking the musicians any curious questions you migh have:)

Jean-Paul Brodbeck, piano
At the tender age of 15, Basel, Switzerland–born Jean-Paul Brodbeck was invited by no other than Lionel Hampton to jam onstage. After taking jazz classes with Hans Feigenwinter, he went on to study classical music with Peter Efler (piano) at the Conservatory of Music in Basel, from which he graduated with excellence in 1995 and earned his pianoteacher’s diploma. Since then Brodbeck has proved his stylistic versatility in diverse formations. He was one of the principal founders of the experimental hip-hop group Chapter 12 and has been collaborating on and off with Andy Scherrer, who has considerably contributed to his musical development. From 2007 through 2010, Brodbeck was a member of the quartet headed by renowned Austrian guitar player Wolfgang Muthspiel. 2011 he gained a scholarship of the city of Zürich for a six month stay in New York where he recorded his Album “A different mind “ on Enja Records. These days he works with Johannes Enders's quartet, featuring the drum legend Billy Hart. Brodbeck often performs in trio, works as a sideman in different formations, and teaches in the Jazz Department at the University of Music in Lucerne, Switzerland. In 2022 he released together with Kurt Rosenwinkel, the album “The Chopin Project” on Heartcore Records. The collaboration led to another album: “The Brahms Project” in 2024. The band brought this project to stages such as the Carnegie Hall in New York. Brodbeck has performed with such artists as Lionel Hampton, Herbie Mann, Andy Scherrer, David Liebmann, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Nat Su, Nils Wogram, Matthieu Michel, Johannes Enders, Billy Hart, JoJo Mayer, Jochen Rückert, Ben Street, Maria Schneider, Richie Beirach, Elina Duni, Feya Faku, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jorge Rossy.

Lukas Traxel, double bass
Lukas Traxel is one of the most sought-after jazz bassists in Europe.
Born in the Swiss Alps, his playing is as grounded as the mountains he grew up among, and at the same time flowing and rushing like the river that makes its way through the valley. Or as Mirko Weber put it in the Stuttgarter Zeitung: "Spirit plus skill plus energy for two". These attributes have led to his regularly appearing on stage with musicians such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Lionel Loueke, Ralph Alessi, Uri Caine, Dejan Terzic, Nils Wogram, Florian Weber or Elina Duni in recent years.
His discography now includes over three dozen releases as a sideman.
Lukas Traxel also performs regularly solo and his trio with the two exceptional musicians Otis Sandsjö (Sweden/Saxophone) and Moritz Baumgärtner (Germany/Drums) will release his debut album "One-Eyed Daruma" on the renowned label "Wejazz" in spring 2023.

Where is Lavatersaal?
The Lavatersaal is located on the 1st floor of the Lavaterhaus. The Lavaterhaus is situated right across the St. Peter's church next to a water fountain.
Is the Apéro free of charge?
Yes, it is offered free of charge by the host as an opportunity to meet and exchange.
Can kids of any age attend the event?
Kids older than 6 years old are welcomed to attend the event.
