Finding the Joy (and the Funny) in Musical Improv: Weekend Intensive

(two years of improv or musical comedy experience required - no improvised musical experience needed)

Baby Wants Candy (BWC) is thrilled to lead a two day music improv intensive in Switzerland. Two amazing improvisors and musicians, Adrien Pellerin and Derek Demkowicz, will spend their entire weekend teaching you everything they know about improvised musicals.

BWC is renowned for its fun, joyful and hilarious playing style. We foster this in the students in all our workshops. 

Based on BWC’s signature form - a one hour, completely improvised musical with a full band - participants will learn how to:

• Learn/rehearse basic song structure
• Explore a variety of options of types of songs - both in structure and in genre
• Create musical narratives while still maintaining the funny
• Use the game of the scene, characters, emotions & wants to create strong comedic songs
• Using emotion to help make singing much easier
• Rhyme confidently and consistently
• Elevate your chorus’ to find the funny through dedicated word play training
• Learn to play and let loose
• Demolish the feeling of "Oh god, what do I sing about?" when the music starts, and go into your songs feeling excited and relaxed!

Baby Wants Candy draws upon its years of experience, with over 4,000 improvised musicals and counting, for its workshops. Our style combines what we consider are the best parts of UCB and iO, both institutions at which we performed and taught for years. Baby Wants Candy and their spinoff show Shamilton just enjoyed a completely sold-out month long run at the Edinburgh Fringe, and Derek and Adrien will be coming off a two-week tour of the UK with Shamilton.

Cost: 360 CHF. 

Cancellation policy: We understand that plans change, but no-shows deprive other folks of a chance to learn and makes it hard for us to pay our amazing trainers. We can offer a 50% refund if you cancel by 11pm on Tuesday, 10 September. If you cancel your registration after 11pm on Tuesday, 10 September or do not show up for the workshop, you will be charged full price (or you may find a replacement who can take your place).

BIOS

Derek (BWC Cast) and Adrien (BWC Musical Director) are so excited to teach and perform for the fine folks of Switzerland! Both were part of BWC and Shamilton's fully sold-out run at Edinburgh Fringe in 2023 and are currently performing in our sold-out runs in 2024. They've also led Baby Wants Candy musical and non-musical improv workshops for all levels of skills for thousands of students. Derek is part of BWC's Chicago cast and Adrien is our NYC Musical Director.

Derek Demkowicz is an LA-based actor, improviser, and musician. He joined Baby Wants Candy and Shamilton cast in Chicago, where he also trained and performed at Second City, io and a variety of Chicago comedy theatres. You can catch him in feature films (Camp Manna, Dinner in America), national commercials (5-Hour Energy), and performing improv comedy in Shamilton (UCB), Baby Wants Candy (UCB). Derek also performs at Mission IMPROVable (Westside Comedy Theater).

Adrien Pellerin is an NYC-based actor, improviser, producer and musical director. He has served as musical director for Baby Wants Candy and Shamilton all over the world for many years, including for BWC's scripted hit show Thrones! as well as our runs at Adelaide Fringe, Edinburgh Fringe, the Kennedy Center and in New York City at UCB, BCC and Caveat. His work has appeared on Comedy Central, Adult Swim and Funny or Die. He performs sketch comedy and musical improv regularly in New York City and at festivals around the world. Adrien returns for his third trip to Switzerland. Derek and Adrien will be on Shamilton's UK tour post Fringe 2024 prior to arriving in Switzerland.

BABY WANTS CANDY is one of the most popular and celebrated comedy ensembles in the world. Currently, BWC has open runs in Los Angeles, New York City, and Chicago, as well as an international touring company. BWC has performed and led workshops for thousands in the US, Asia, Europe and Australia, our scripted shows have been translated into 11 languages (including French and German!), and have enjoyed 9 fully sold out Edinburgh Fringe runs.
