Eine Einladung zum Eintauchen in Sarah Chaksads Klangkosmos. Die Saxofonistin präsentiert im Konzertraum des Noten- und Musikbuchladens Notenpunkt im Zürcher Oberdorf ihr neues Trio. Seit gut zehn Jahren ist Sarah Chaksad mit grossen Ensembles in der europäische Jazzszene unterwegs – als gefeierte Komponistin wie als Solistin mit unverwechselbarem Sound. «Sarah Chaksad hat eine eigene, subtile musikalische Handschrift gefunden, eine Art kompositorisches Destillat der versammelten Klangfarben ihres Ensembles, nicht anders als die beiden grossen Schweizer Figuren des grossorchestralen Jazz, George Gruntz und Mathias Rüegg», schreibt der Jazzkritiker Peter Rüedi.
Im Kanton Aargau wuchs sie auf, besuchte in Bern die Jazzschule und studierte an der Musik-Akademie Basel Saxofon. Während mehrerer Jahre leitete sie den Jazzcampus Club Basel. Heute ist sie Co-Leiterin des Institut Jazz der Musikschule Basel.
Ihr Trio ist intimer als das Large Ensemble. Mit dem Bassisten Dominique Girod und dem Schlagzeuger Iago Fernández verdichtet Chaksad ihre Musik zu einem Gespräch zu dritt, in dem jede Stimme Gewicht erhält und Raum hat. Die Kraft ihrer Kompositionen bleibt spürbar – rhythmisch vertrackt, melodisch berührend, mit unerwarteten Wendungen –, doch verstärkt das kleine Format ihre Dringlichkeit und gibt der Spielfreude Platz. Hier verschmelzen drei Individuen zu einer energiegeladenen, nuancenreichen Einheit. Was in den grossen Ensembles an orchestraler Farbenvielfalt beeindruckt, gewinnt im Trio an Unmittelbarkeit und Tiefe. So entsteht Musik, die gleichsam geerdet und luftig ist: transparent, beweglich, interaktiv.

For more than ten years, Sarah Chaksad has been a vital presence on the European jazz scene with large ensembles – celebrated both as a composer and as a soloist with a distinctive sound. Jazz critic Peter Rüedi writes: “Sarah Chaksad has found her own subtle musical signature, a kind of compositional distillate of the gathered tonal colors of her ensemble – not unlike the two great Swiss figures of orchestral jazz, George Gruntz and Mathias Rüegg.”
Born in the canton of Aargau, she attended the Jazz School in Bern and studied saxophone at the Basel Academy of Music. For several years she directed the Jazzcampus Club Basel, and today she is co-director of the Jazz Institute at the Basel Music School.
Her trio is more intimate than the large ensemble. With bassist Dominique Girod and drummer Iago Fernández, Chaksad distills her music into a three-way conversation in which every voice carries weight and has space to unfold. The force of her compositions remains palpable – rhythmically intricate, melodically touching, full of unexpected turns – but the smaller format heightens their urgency and opens up room for playfulness. Here, three individuals merge into an energetic, finely nuanced whole. What impresses in the large ensembles with orchestral richness of color gains immediacy and depth in the trio. The result is music that is at once grounded and airy: transparent, flexible, interactive.
