Ashta-Nayika is a collective term described by Bharata in his Sanskrit treatise on performing arts - Natya Shastra (200 BCE – 200 CE).
The eight Nayikas describe eight different emotions relating to their hero or Nayaka. As the archetype of romantic heroines, the themes were incorporated into Indian painting, literature, sculpture and classical Indian dance.
