Partying until the doctor arrives? Sounds great, but not at the expense of the environment! While we pop the champagne, nature often grits its teeth. Large-scale events generate massive amounts of waste and CO₂ emissions. In Berlin alone, public events produce around 1,600 tonnes of waste per year, with 750 tonnes coming from major events with over 100,000 visitors. At Austria's Frequency Festival, 330 tonnes of waste were left behind by 200,000 visitors in just three days. Imagine the hangover from an event of this magnitude – even the most seasoned party animal would go pale.

Why is sustainability in events becoming more important?

First, the environmental impact is huge: energy consumption, waste, and travel all take a toll on our climate and resources. Secondly, visitors are increasingly looking for ways to celebrate with a clear conscience. A green event leaves a positive impact (and no sea of waste) and can even save costs by reducing single-use materials. In short: sustainable partying is in, and far from being a buzzkill. On the contrary – with the right ideas, your event will be not only eco-friendly but also more creative and at least twice as cool.

How does it work? Here are 7 ideas for an eco-friendly party that keeps the vibes high and the planet happy. 🎉🌍

1. Zero-waste decor: Celebrate in style without a mountain of rubbish

Decor sets the mood for a party, but plastic confetti that lingers for centuries? No thanks. Sustainable decoration means: maximum wow effect, minimal waste. Say goodbye to disposable garlands and balloons that sag in the corner by the morning (only to end up in the ocean). Instead, go stylish with zero-waste decor:

1 ZeroWaste
  • Natural materials instead of plastic: Try fabric bunting from old textiles, banners made from recycled newspapers, or decor pieces crafted from wood and dried flowers. Not only does it look elegant, but it's also biodegradable or reusable. Mason jars with candles create a cosy glow – and go back on the shelf, not into the bin.
  • Reusable over disposable: Rent decorations or use what you already have. Many event agencies offer reusable decor – from fabric tablecloths to LED fairy lights. If 100 parties use the same bunting, that’s 99 times less waste. Cities like Nuremberg have even banned single-use decor in public spaces, significantly reducing event waste.
  • DIY with a personal touch: Handmade decorations make an impression and save resources. Old wine corks can be turned into name tags, wooden pallets into rustic signs. Even confetti can be sustainable: punch out leaves or old newspaper – it falls just as beautifully but without the plastic litter.

Zero-waste decor means no more bin bags filled with once-used banners, foil streamers, and plastic junk. Did you know that Oktoberfest reuses nearly all its dishes and decorations, despite welcoming 6.7 million visitors? No wonder it produces only about 800 tonnes of waste – much less than other major events. The rule is simple: reusable decor = less waste. So the only thing that will be left after the party is the hangover, not a landfill. 😉

2. Vegan and local cuisine: Climate protection through the stomach

The way to someone’s heart is through their stomach – and so does sustainability. What we eat has a huge impact on an event’s carbon footprint. Meat-heavy buffet vs. vegan feast? The difference is staggering: animal products are responsible for 69% of food-related greenhouse gas emissions in Germany, and nearly half of that could be avoided by switching to plant-based food.

A vegan burger instead of a beef steak saves tons of CO₂. Okay, maybe not per piece, but it adds up over time. Plus, it conserves water and land.

Besides what we eat, where it comes from matters. Local and seasonal ingredients have shorter transport routes and a lower CO₂ footprint. Strawberry cake in December? Not ideal – those berries travel thousands of miles. Better go for apple pie with apples from a nearby farm. Supporting local businesses tastes better and is better for the planet. Local + seasonal = optimal.

3. Digital invitations and Tickets

Elegant paper invitations with gold trim might look fancy, but let’s be honest – trees were sacrificed for them. It’s 2025, and digital invitations are practical, eco-friendly, and budget-friendly. Why waste trees, CO₂ and water for cards that will most likely end up in the bin anyway?

To put it into numbers: a single A4 sheet is produced using around 10 litres of water.

Printed 100 invitations? That’s hundreds of litres of water. Producing 1 tonne of fresh fibre paper requires around 17 trees and 24,000 litres of water.

Instead, use tools like Paperless Post or Canva to create virtual invitations that look just as elegant – but without the waste. With personal photos, fancy fonts, and even animations, digital invitations reach your guests with one click.

Tickets can also be conveniently used digitally and without the paper chaos. Eventfrog makes it easy to sell digital tickets online. Guests don't have to print anything, but can save and use their tickets directly on their mobile phone or in the Eventfrog app. This not only saves resources, but also makes the entire ticketing process simpler and more sustainable. Paperless celebrations have never been so uncomplicated!

4. Climate-friendly travel

The band arrives by private jet, each guest in their own car... and 70% of event emissions come from travel. That means this is a key area to cut CO₂.
Luckily, there are easy solutions:

  • Choose a venue with public transport links: A central location or shuttle buses from nearby stations make leaving the car at home an easy choice.
  • Carpooling & shuttles: For remote venues, a shuttle service is gold.
  • Rewards for green travel: Offer incentives, like premium parking for carpoolers or a free welcome drink for anyone showing a train ticket.

5. Sustainable gifts & goodie bags

No more plastic junk! Many event giveaways are cheap, wasteful, or dust collectors. Instead, opt for:

  •

  • Edible or consumable gifts: Local honey, handmade soap, Fair Trade chocolate...
  • Upcycled & practical items: Bamboo coffee cups, reusable tote bags...
  • Charity donations instead of corporate swag.

6. Reusable tableware

Disposable plates, plastic cutlery, disposable cups? A single party night can fill an entire dumpster. The best solution? Reusable tableware.

5 Wiederverwenden

Even with washing and transport, reusable cups are far more eco-friendly than disposables. Studies show that even in the worst-case scenario, single-use is still twice as bad as reusable.  Germany uses 2.8 billion disposable coffee cups per year. Lined up, they could form a multi-lane highway from Munich to Berlin and back. Oktoberfest proves it works: 7 million litres of beer, all served in reusable steinszero disposable cups wasted.

7. Waste management: Separate correctly

Even the most sustainable event generates some waste. The key is to handle it smartly:

  • Effective waste separation: Make it easy and fun. Label bins with fun signs like “Plastic Paul” for recycling.

With these tips, you can host an event that’s eco-friendly and even more enjoyable. Every little step counts, and together, we can make a big difference! 💚
