The Long Night of Zurich's Museums: 25 years of cultural experience, digital since 2021

Since 2000, Zurich's museums have been opening their doors late into the night on the first Saturday in September – from the major institutions to the smallest specialist collection. One ticket gets you into all of them. With over 50 museums, thousands of visitors and a single shared ticket, the Long Night is one of Switzerland's largest interconnected cultural events.

In 2021, the Long Night fully digitalised its ticketing – and chose Eventfrog to do it.

The challenge: 1 ticket, over 50 doors

The Long Night needs a ticket that is valid at more than 50 entrances at once and shows the same up-to-date status at every admission point, no matter which museum it is checked in at.

  • More than just admission. The ticket covers not only every participating museum, but also the VBZ museum shuttle buses and public transport within zone 110. Visitors move freely between venues all evening – with a single ticket in hand.
  • Admission at over 50 locations simultaneously. Each museum handles its own admission, with its own team and its own procedures. The ticket has to be valid and unambiguously verifiable, whichever venue it is checked in at.
  • Extreme peaks in a short window. The majority of visitors arrive within just a few hours. The check-in load isn't spread across a day – it comes all at once.
  • Many admission helpers using their own smartphones. Admission control has to be simple enough to work without lengthy onboarding, even when extra helpers join at short notice.
  • Sales across multiple channels. Online, through the organiser's own box offices and on the event evening itself – with a live overview of capacity throughout.
  • Digitalisation under time pressure. An event that had grown over more than two decades needed to digitalise its ticketing – while also meeting the federal contact tracing requirements in force at the time.

«When a ticket can be checked in at over 50 locations, reliability is everything. That calls for a partner we can genuinely count on.»

Nicole Mayer, Managing Director, Verein Zürcher Museen

The solution: planned centrally, controlled locally

Eventfrog covers the entire chain – from marketing and online ordering through to check-in at the museum door and the analysis after the event.

One system instead of 50 islands
All categories, capacities and sales channels come together centrally into a single overall picture.

Admission via the Entry App
Over 150 smartphones in use across more than 50 locations – new helpers are ready to go in seconds.

Cashless from a single provider
On-site box offices use Eventfrog Cashless – sales and analysis come together centrally.

Figures as it happens
Live reporting shows what's going on as the evening unfolds – and that data forms the basis for the next edition.

Additional reach
The event is given prominent placement on public transport, in print and online media, and on Eventfrog itself.

Personal support
A dedicated contact person is there from the planning stage through to the busiest moments on the event evening and the debriefing afterwards.

«With Eventfrog, we were able to digitalise both ticket sales and admission and simplify our processes considerably. The central organisation and the meaningful statistics are a clear added value for us.»

Why it continues

After five editions with Eventfrog, the Verein Zürcher Museen reviewed a range of ticketing solutions through a tender process at the end of 2025. The outcome: convinced that they have found the right solution, they will continue their partnership with Eventfrog. Four points were decisive.

  • Reliability that has proven itself. Open, honest communication and tangible improvements over recent years made the case.
  • Support with a face to it. Over the years, a working relationship has grown in which both sides know each other – and know the event. Questions reach people who already have the context.
  • Honest and transparent. Eventfrog is committed to transparent, comprehensible fees with no hidden extra costs.
  • A system that grows with you. Processes and features are continuously improved. Input is taken on board and feeds into further development.

Impressions from the Long Night

One evening, over 50 venues: from the succulent plant collection and the tram museum through to the Museum für Gestaltung.

«Continuing the partnership is a clear sign of our confidence in Eventfrog. What mattered most to us is that Eventfrog isn't just a platform, but above all a dependable partner. We're looking forward to developing the LONG NIGHT experience further together, for visitors and museums alike.»

Nicole Mayer, Managing Director, Verein Zürcher Museen

Conclusion: scale isn't a special case

The Long Night shows that Eventfrog reliably supports not only small and medium-sized events, but also major events with many locations, high visitor numbers and complex procedures.

Whether it's a festival with several admission areas, a trade fair with several halls or an association event across several venues – the underlying problem is always the same: one ticket, many admission points, a narrow window of time. In a no-obligation conversation, we'll show you how ticketing, admission and cashless can all come together centrally at your event.
