Geprägt wurde der Begriff der »ecosexuality« von Annie Sprinkle und Beth Stephens als künstlerisch-politische Praxis; beim Philosophen Andreas Weber findet sich eine verwandte Vorstellung in der Idee einer erotischen Ökologie. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage, wie Beziehungen zwischen Menschen und ihrer natürlichen Umgebung als Liebesbeziehungen gestaltet werden können.

The Earth as Mother and Lover. In an ecosexual Butoh performance accompanied by an opulent live soundtrack, Dorothée Jansen and Sasperella La Sirène explore our intimate relationship with our home planet. At the center is honey—as a natural product, a food source, and a gift from the bees.
Ecosexuality shifts our perspective on our relationship with the Earth: it views the Earth not only as a mother, but also as a lover. The term “ecosexuality” was coined by Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens as an artistic-political practice; philosopher Andreas Weber offers a related concept in his idea of an erotic ecology. The central question is how relationships between people and their natural environment can be shaped as loving relationships.
The relationship between flowers and bees is a vivid example of this. The bee receives nectar and pollen and, in return, contributes to the pollination of plants—a significant portion of our diet depends on this service. Honey is produced from the fruits of this relationship: from flower nectar that the bees collect, transform, and store in the hive. But honey is not a gift to be taken for granted. For millennia, humans have taken it from the hives and used it as food, medicine, and a delicacy. Beekeeping, too, is thus a form of appropriation—even when practiced with great care. Dorothee Jansen works as a Butoh performer at the intersections of the body, ecology, and ritual.
