The University of Basel Research Network Resposible Digital Society presents the RDS Movie Night, showing a classic movie and considering the relevance of its vision of a technological future to the world of today.
In this second edition, we'll be watching Blade Runner. Set in an imagined dystopian Los Angeles in the far distant year 2019, Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former "blade runner" is tasked with hunting down and "retiring" rogue replicants - bioengineered humanoid androids that are almost indistiguishable from real humans. The film digs into the blurring of lines between artificial inteligence (AI) and humanity, the ethical questions around “ownership” of an artificial conciousness, and the central question of “can machines feel?”.
In a world where AI is advancing at break-neck-speed, and more and more people are seeking AI companions, the questions thrown up by this film are more relevant than ever.
Registration is free of charge. There will be an oportunity for informal discussion of the film at a networking apero after the viewing.
Please note, the film will be shown in English with German subtitles.
